Greetings fishing enthusiasts,

Over the past couple of weeks we have been in contact with both Mr. Lagarde and Mr. Keller in hopes of gaining new contacts and mentors for the future of our lure creation process and designs.

We look forward to reaching out and documenting our interactions with all of the resources they have provided soon.

Until next time,

-2FellasFishing

Greetings fishing enthusiasts,

Recently, we have had a successful Fellows review and followed up with Mr. Lagarde in search of mentors and interview opportunities with both local and even professional anglers.

We have also continued to tie flies and are continuing to branch out into new tying patterns. A tying guide video will be released soon on our YouTube about how to tie a clouser minnow as soon as we are done editing.

Until next time,

- 2FellasFishing

Greetings fishing enthusiasts!

As we progress into the new year, 2FellasFishing has many exciting updates and insight into the process of our project!

First, we have gained access to a Premiere Pro account. Previously dependent on iMovie, the new editing and video production opportunities are significantly higher. While iMovie has been great, the ability to take our editing and production into the next level with a more advanced program will be beneficial to our whole project. We have been experimenting with new techniques, styles, and transitions and we look forward to sharing this new quality of content in our upcoming videos.

Next, over the winter break we took a trip to Bass Pro to purchase many of the necessary materials required for fly tying. If you recall from our previous blog posts we had purchased a fly-tying kit and we now have the materials that can be used in that kit at our disposal. While we got all the necessary materials, we also got distracted by the large fish tanks and the fun items at Bass Pro (as expected!). You could probably spend a whole day at Bass Pro if you truly wanted to.

Also, with the fly tying materials purchased, we were able to meet up and tie our first fly. We chose to tie the Clouser fly, which combines many of the attributes of the lures that were successful for a variety of the species we caught in our summer video series. This Clouser fly imitates a baitfish, which is commonly preyed upon by many different types of fish. What makes this fly a great starting point for us to begin tying is the fact that it is not just specific to one type of fish. Many of the fish caught in our videos will easily go after this fly. In order to tie this, we researched and studied many videos and websites that were extremely beneficial in learning the process. It is certainly tricky, but we have gotten the hang of it! However, we are not just copying the fly design demonstrated from the internet, rather we are incorporating many aspects such as style and color that are beneficial to the species available and researched from the summer that are specific to this area and the Chesapeake Bay. Additionally, instead of just purchasing all the items necessary, we have looked further into locally sourcing them from nature and really understanding where the materials come from and how they are used. For example, one of the materials used for the Clouser fly is buck tail. Instead of buying this, we contacted some of our hunter friends and were able to secure natural buck tail that can be utilized in our tying process.

So...where do we go from here?

Now that we have learned and researched about the Clouser fly, we plan on releasing a video encompassing this process of tying and the characteristics of the fly early next week. We will make sure to include a time-lapse! From here, with the materials needed fully acquired and our creative spirits, we hope to continue to release content throughout the end of the month with new lure designs and projects. Furthermore, we have begun to research the process of airbrushing lure blanks. We look forward to what the future of our lure production holds.

Until next time,

-2FellasFishing

Hello fishing enthusiasts!

Our fly tying kit has arrived and we have begun to experiment with the different elements associated with tying flies. Additionally, over the past couple of weeks we have met with Mrs. Carsley and Ms. Blanck and have set some exciting goals for the rest of the winter. Our winter goals are as follows:

  1. Meet with BKD lures (local lure company) via Zoom and conduct an interview/shop tour that highlights their process/setup---------->Once the interview is conducted, upload the full video on YouTube---------->Determine how we can incorporate and scale our own lure production based off of advice and insight from the interview
  2. Follow up with other lure companies (both local and large-scale) to pursue more interviews and shop tours
  3. Finalize lure designs for each species paying close attention to color, design, and other small details--------->Go in to depth in our sketches to create an accurate model
  4. Learn how to use recently purchased fly tying kit--------->visit Bass Pro to purchase supplies to tie different types of flies
  5. Pursue/research airbrushing lure blanks------>Airbrushing lures will allows us to replicate patterns, colors, and different styles of lures (airbrushing may be a more feasible option rather than creation of hard plastic lures)
  6. Reach out to Mr. Janigen to discuss access to Premiere Pro/different editing software
  7. Begin to film/edit YouTube video series documenting lure creation
Happy fishing!!!!

Hello fishing enthusiasts!

One of our main goals for November/December was planning and organizing interviews with a local lure company to understand their process. After sending out multiple emails to a variety of companies, we have gotten a response from BKD lures (a local lure brand) and are in the process of finalizing the date to speak with a member of their team. In addition to the interview, we hope to get a tour of their setup whether it be virtual or in person, taking note of their supplies used, overall design inspiration, process, and business model.

To follow up on our last blog post, we have purchased a fly tying kit to begin creating our own fly lures. This kit will provide us with the general supplies to start, while still allowing us to create our lures to our exact specifications and designs. As we create our lures, we will continue to document the process via video, photos, and our YouTube channel.

Lastly, while we received one email from BKD, we still hope to interview other companies. Since we have sent multiple emails to different companies previously, we will soon be sending out follow up emails and messages to the companies that have not yet responded hoping to produce more responses.

Following up from our last blog post, earlier this month we reached out to multiple local lure companies to inquire about interviews and possible opportunities to visit and see their lure making setup.

Although we haven't gotten a response yet, we plan to follow up on our messages and inquire in different methods other than email to see if we can produce a response and secure an interview/tour opportunity.

In the meantime, we have tentatively planned out the materials that may be required to tie our own flies. We are looking further into different models and companies best fit to our needs, but are planning on purchasing a fly tying kit soon. This kit would allow us to create our own saltwater and freshwater flies to the exact specifications and qualities that we have deemed optimal for attracting a wide array of species in the Chesapeake Bay.

We have continued to brainstorm new lures and the supplies needed, but most importantly we have sent emails to 4 local bait makers with the hope of gaining interviews and tours of their bait shops. We also hope to create relationships with these bait makers and stay in contact so they can act as mentors for us when we begin making our own lures.

The companies we emailed:
1. https://www.geyejigs.com/contact
2. https://highoctanecb.com
3. https://www.bkdlures.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html

Preliminary Lure Designs

Picture
This initial design of our Clouser Minnow style fly, is the same style fly Paul used to catch his big speckled trout in episode 4. It utilizes multicolor bucktail hair to mimic different kinds of bait. The color Paul used had an olive green and white bucktail pattern, which we will definitely create in the future.

Picture
This initial design of our fly popper utilizes a foam body, so it floats, and a cupped mouth to displace as much water when you pop it. This displacement of water will hopefully attract the fish and entice a bite. It will also contain feathering and other materials to mimic fins and a tail to replicate a baitfish look.

For the past weeks we have been working on more preliminary lure designs as well as listing the materials we will need to create these designs. Above is a popper and Clouser minnow both to be used fly fishing for many freshwater and saltwater species, such as striper, bass, perch, redfish, trout, and more. We also plan to reach out to local and large bait makers as soon as possible.

Fishing Report
Rocktober is in full effect and as the big rockfish make their way up the bay, many rockfish can be seen breaking on the surface with birds. Some key lures include, poppers, walking baits, paddle tails, metals, and jigs. The fish can also be caught trolling tandem and umbrella rigs at a speed of around 2.5-3 knots.

Since the morning meeting presentation, we have successfully uploaded descriptions and complete thumbnails to all videos. We also realized that there was a slight problem with one of the videos that was already posted, so that was re-uploaded. The videos will be used as a tool in the coming months.

For the month of October, we have set two main goals to reach in regards to our progress:

These goals are to send out an email requesting an interview with local and large-scale lure makers via zoom and begin our preliminary lure designs.

As far as the first goal of setting up interviews, we have identified and gathered the contact information of the lure makers that we hope to reach out to. The email is completely drafted and will be sent out sometime this week. We will make sure to CC you Mrs. Carsley!

As far as the preliminary lure design, we have begin sketching out designs and implementing the research shown in our videos. As we continue to produce these designs, they will be uploaded within the "Preliminary Lure Design" section of our website. We should have multiple designs by the end of the week.

Fishing Report

Upper Bay

As we prepare for trolling season there are still many fish to be caught in the rivers and the main bay. Rockfish can still be found at shallow water rock jetties on paddle tails, jigs, poppers, and walking baits. Perch still fill the rivers around docks and in the shallows to be caught on spinners. As it get colder the stripers will push out to the ledges and drop offs of the main bay making trolling umbrella rigs and tandems a really good way to catch stripers.

Lower Bay

Redfish and trout can still be caught in the shallows on flats, around submerged grasses, and drop offs. As the weather gets colder the more the fish will stage on drop offs and the less they will push shallow. Swim baits are alway a sure way to get some bites, but other methods like twitch baits, straight tails, and top water walking baits. Bluefish and Spanish mackerel can also be caught on main bay points and especially in the shipping channel trolling spoons behind planner boards or by casting different metals.

Freshwater

As the water cools down the largemouth bass will become less stressed and easier to catch in ponds and lakes. Top water can be used and moving baits like jerk baits, crank baits, and more can be used as the bass become more active. Soft plastic lures and worms can also still be used when the bite gets tough.

In addition to these two videos, our 7th and 8th videos will be released this weekend. We have updated the website to showcase our videos with a unique page as well as designated a section of the website for lure designs. As we continue to design our lures, this page will be filled with images and descriptions. Within the next week, we plan on sending out many emails to local and national lure makers to try and secure an interview about their process. This will give us insight as to what we would like to try and do for our own lures. We have written up a draft of the email and will send it out soon.

P.S. You can also visit our video gallery on the top tabs of this website to access all of our content.

Lure Designs

This is the first draw up for a paddle tail swimsuit we hope to make with the placeholder name of The Dart Swimmer. We hope to make multiple sizes of this lure. We designed this lure to mimic a small bait fish, mud minnow, and glass minnow. It has a big paddle on the back with a large surface are to enhance movement and give the lure a wobbling action. There is a thin piece of plastic in-front of the tail to further improve the lures swimming action. we also added eyes, a fin, and gills to make the lure look more realistic. On the right is an above view of the lure, showing its slender profile.
